Originally manufactured by Sandford & Yates of Rotherham in 1826, this remarkable sectional cast-iron bridge survived for almost two centuries before being struck by a falling tree, causing the structure to collapse into the lake below. Its owner believed the bridge to be beyond repair, we didn’t agree!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recovery and Assessment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The first task was to recover the individual cast-iron sections from the lake. Each surviving component was carefully retrieved, numbered and laid out so that the original structure could effectively be reconstructed as a giant jigsaw puzzle. Every panel was then assessed to determine whether it could be repaired or would need to be recast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Repair and Reconstruction<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Working in collaboration with H. Downs & Sons, specialist iron founders in Huddersfield, seven damaged cast-iron panels were completely recast. A further eight original panels were capable of being retained and were repaired using bolted reinforcing plates, preserving as much of the original 1826 structure as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the most remarkable features of the bridge is its method of construction. Although manufactured almost entirely from cast iron, the original structure employs techniques more commonly associated with traditional carpentry. The individual sections are joined using dovetail joints secured with cast-iron wedges, rather than conventional bolted connections. The only bolts now present in the structure are those introduced during the repair of damaged panels and those securing the replacement timber deck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Replacement Iroko Deck<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The reconstructed bridge was re-boarded using substantial 3 inch sawn Iroko planking of various widths in keeping with the age and nature of the structure. The deck needed not only to provide a durable surface appropriate for the exposed location, but also to be sufficiently robust to accommodate the passage of horses. The hardwood boarding was fixed directly to the restored structure, allowing the original cast-iron construction to remain the dominant feature of the bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Balustrading and Traditional Metalwork<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

New balustrading was fabricated on site using 20 mm square bar with a 50 \u00d7 6 mm convex top rail, allowing it to be formed accurately to the bridge. Once fabricated, the sections were removed for galvanising and powder coating before being returned to site for final installation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rather than introducing modern fixings, the handrail was secured into the existing sockets in the original cast-iron bridge panels using the traditional technique of leading it into place, maintaining the character and integrity of the original construction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gate and Traditional Latch<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The bridge gate was completed with a hand-made latch designed so that it could be operated from horseback. Rather than introducing a modern fitting, the latch was carefully reproduced from an existing historic example elsewhere on the estate, ensuring that the new work remained sympathetic to the character and intended use of the bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Completed Restoration<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Following reconstruction, installation of the Iroko deck and completion of the balustrading and gate, the bridge was returned to service while retaining both its historic appearance and its unusual original method of construction. Wherever possible, original components were preserved and repaired, with new work introduced only where necessary to restore the strength, function and longevity of the structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Preserving the Bridge’s History<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The restoration was completed in 2012, almost two centuries after the bridge was originally manufactured by Sandford & Yates of Rotherham. A new plaque recording the restoration was installed alongside the original 1826 maker’s plate, providing a permanent record of another chapter in the life of this remarkable structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
